We have a traditional 3 bedroom, 2-storey home in beautiful Calgary, Alberta. We use our bedrooms in traditional ways: master suite, office, guest room. I was lucky enough to have the space to transform a room into MY craft room. Yep, I know how lucky I am! Eventually, that room changed into a storage room, and is way less crafty. I've also been trying to add a reading nook to our master suite with no luck. The corner isn't big enough to fit comfortable furniture without looking snug.
In the past few months, my husband came to me with an idea. He'd been on Pinterest (gasp, I know), looking at how others were using their space to suit their needs and not how it SHOULD BE used in the traditional sense. We have 150 square feet that once was a beacon of light (literally, it was painted bright pink and blue, and it GLOWED). The light has since been dimmed but it still calls to us to make something useful of this underutilized space.
My hubby fires up his Pinterest board and shows me what he's thinking. He asks me, “What do we love to do?” Actually thinking about the two of us as people and our favorite things:
- Quiet time
- Work space separate from our office
His board was full of soothing spaces, relaxing colours, lounge chairs, interesting textures. He said “Why not use the space for what we want? It's just the two of us for now, so make a reading room. A quiet moment room, a meditation room, a brainstorming room, a craft room (I can't completely give it up). A room that fits our lives.”
We decided to move forward with this idea. It's definitely a work in progress, I don't want to hide all my craft supplies but they can't be everywhere! We have created a physical idea board in our office to collaborate on a color scheme and furniture we love. Once we can agree who's going to paint the room, we'll be on our way. Let's not even get started on that discussion!
I now ask you:
How do you use the spaces in your home? Form over function? Is there a space just for you, your sanctuary? If you looked at your rooms, how would you make changes? Can you? I know that right now we can be selfish with our home, but our room with a view will change when our lives change.
Close your eyes, take a second, dream with me…
